The shunt enables his body to move excess fluid out of his brain. In December 2008, he had a second shunt inserted as the first one could no longer drain the excess fluid quick enough. I struggled with the idea of my dad being a grandfather in that his grandchildren wouldn’t know him the way I have, before his stroke. It took me a long time to overcome this concern, along with a lot of grief and anger, and accept that the man is still my father. He is still as strong as he ever was, just in different ways now. I now understand I will never stop learning from him, and neither will anyone else in his life, including his grandchildren.
