Aphasia affects a person's ability to express and understand verbal and written language. Treatment often involves speech therapy that focuses on relearning and practicing language skills and using alternative or supplementary communication methods, such as a computer or tape recorder. My dad's ability to speak has slowly improved since his stroke, but he still only retains the ability to speak random sentences and has sayings he repeats such as, "I know it," and "It's good, it's good." I struggled with the idea of my dad being a grandfather in that his grandchildren wouldn’t know him the way I have, before his stroke. It took me a long time to overcome this concern, along with a lot of grief and anger, and accept that the man is still my father. He is still as strong as he ever was, just in different ways now. I now understand I will never stop learning from him, and neither will anyone else in his life, including his grandchildren. December 25, 2014.</image:caption>
